PostHeaderIcon Tween Eco Activists - 'Plant for the Planet' Founder Felix Finkbeiner Plants One Million Trees (VIDEO)

One Million Trees! That's just how many new trees youth activist Felix Finkbeiner of Germany has planted due to his inspiration by fellow youth Wangari Maathi of Kenya.

I find it inspiring to see young activists who put forth such great effort on behalf of Mother Earth and it makes me hopeful my own children will work to make a difference in their world. My kids have planted a few trees and I make a point of showing them how important trees are but the idea that this young child has done so much at so early in his life makes me think I've been a very lazy person for most of my life.

I dont think I have done a million of anything so far in my life and the thoughts this youth has already done so much makes me wonder just how far a young person with such inspiration can go. Will this young activist lead the charge and actually make a difference in the world or will he burn out and do little more than he has already?

I think it's obvious that a young person with so much drive is bound for greatness and his work should be just the beginning of a life of service and gratitude towards his Mother Earth. Do you kids have the drive and inspiration to make a difference? Maybe we both should do more as parents to make certain our children achieve these types of goals and ambitions in their lives as well?

Do you promote environmental care and action in your children?

PostHeaderIcon Don't Even Mention Global Warming to Kids

I can understand that you might want to limit the things you tell younger children and maybe there should be some age requirements but it truly seems ridiculous to me that the government would suggest we not even mention global warming to school children. Maybe there are some questions about the science and of course we do not know all of the answers but to simply hide facts from them is ignorant.

Obviously as they grow they will hear about climate change and global warming and it seems best if we just tell them the truth now so that maybe they'll grow up into more earth friendly people who care about the environment. Of course who thinks the government wants kids to act responsibly when it comes to the environment?

SolarShip’s Solar Cargo Helium Plane Is a Futuristic Airship That Actually Exists

People have talked about building futuristic airships for zero emissions cargo shipping for a long time, but most of these green blimps remain on the drawing board. One company, SolarShip, has taken the steps to bring its vision of a green shipping future to life, recently completing the initial test flights for its solar helium plane. The prototype blends the concepts of blimp and airplane by placing a blimp lined with solar panels over an airplane cockpit and landing gear, and using solar power to propel the plane into the air. SolarShip plans to build three sizes of this ship: the small Caracal, the mid-size Chui, and the 30-tonne cargo hauler Nanuq. It appears to be the mid-sized Chui in the test flight video below.

New Study: Kids’ Brains Absorb Twice as Much Cellphone Radiation as Adults

Could giving a cell phone to your kid be considered child abuse? Cell phones are widely believed to cause cancer because of the radiofrequency electromagnetic fields they use. Now, a new scientific study published in the journal Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine finds that kids’ brains may absorb much more cellphone radiation as adults’ brains. According to the report, cell phones are currently certified using a model of an adult’s head, which greatly underestimates the radiation absorption rate for a smaller head.

GREEN GUIDE TO PREFAB: The History of The Kit Home

Prefabricated housing has seen a surge in popularity over the last few years as an affordable, eco-friendly and modern alternative to custom stick-built housing or suburban tract homes. Although prefab construction has experienced a recent spike in popularity in this past decade, the idea of prefabricated building construction is nothing new – prefab designs have been around for over a century, embedded in the history of the modern architecture movement. In order to really understand prefab housing, we’re going to dive into a history lesson and take a look back at the prefab home movement during the last century.

Inhabitat is pleased to announce the launch of a brand new six-part series, The Green Guide To Prefab Housing, where we are enlisting the expertise of graduate architect, former Lindal Cedar Homes CEO and green design consultant Michael Harris. In our first three installments, Michael introduces us to the prefabricated home as a modern, green design alternative, analyzing the roots of factory-made housing and how its core concepts have converged with the precepts of sustainability and modernism. How has factory-built housing been informed by modernism and the green movement? And how has prefab construction influenced green, modern design? Jump ahead to part one this series where Michael will take you on an in-depth tour of a particular type of prefab package; the kit-home.

Scandinavian Scientists Develop Textile That Fixes Its Own Tears

A self-healing raincoat? It sounds like something out of a comic book, a group of Scandinavian researchers working for the EU project Safe@Sea have been developing a new type of textile coating that automatically seals tears on the surface of waterproof workwear. The goal is to create a new generation of “intelligent” clothing for professional fishermen. Working with the plastic material polyurethane, scientists have added micro-capsules containing a liquid sealant to the coating of the fabric. When the coating tears, the capsules burst and release the sealant, which hardens when it comes in contact with water and air.

Group Pushes Major League Baseball to Drop Glenn Beck

A group called Americans United for Change has started a campaign to pressure Major League Baseball (MLB) to end its relationship with demagogue Glenn Beck. Beck left the Fox News Channel earlier this year amid a citizen campaign that succeeded in pressuring nearly 400 advertisers to boycott his show. After leaving Fox, he started his own online television network, GBTV, which charges subscribers $9.95 a month. the interactive branch of the Major League Baseball empire, MLB Advanced Media, agreed to provide Beck's new TV platform with streaming video of sports shows, including baseball games. In response, Americans United for Change launched a website called StrikeOutBeck.com, where viewers can sign a petition asking the corporation that manages America's "favorite pasttime" to cut its ties to Beck. The site features a "Glenn Beck Hall of Hate," with clips of some of Beck's many inflammatory or absurd assertions, like when he said God "punished Japan" with a massive earthquake. Americans United is also running a Facebook ad campaign in major league baseball cities like St. Louis, Detroit, Dallas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Oakland, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and Milwaukee to make people aware of the website and invite them to visit it and sign the petition. A second phase of the campaign is also in the works, which will include more paid ads, probably on sports radio, and urge people to write letters to baseball team owners asking them to end MLB's relationship with Beck. Chicago to Wall Street: Pay US Back!

While the Occupy Wall Street movement is sweeping the country and peaceful arrests are mounting, Chicagoans took to the streets this week to hold the big banks accountable for crashing the economy and to demand city, state and federal policies that work for working families.

For many, the goal was stopping the foreclosure mill and telling the big banks it was time to Pay US Back! for the $4.7 trillion bailout. For others, the demands focused on the fallout from the financial crisis including contentious contract negotiations with the administration of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel.

For most, the range of issues were inextricably linked.

"Occupy Wall Street" Should Protest Wall Street Takeover of Health Care

The lobbyists for U.S. health insurers surely have to be feeling a little uneasy knowing that thousands of Occupy Wall Street demonstrators who have been marching and protesting in Washington as well as New York and other cities might target them in the days ahead. U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone used to say "sometimes you have to pick a fight to win one."

PostHeaderIcon Is the Gulf Oil Spill responsible for poisoned food crops in Mississippi?

Embdedded Image:
Embedded Video:

Yobie Benjamin, writing for The San Francisco Chronicle, is reporting what nobody else in the corporate media is reporting — a mysterious disease has stricken crops in Mississippi and it may be connected to the BP oil gusher. Can this be any more scary then to think our food crops are being poisoned by the Gulf Oil Spill? The science seems sound if the timing is not a bit early yet. i mean that this can happen is probably not in question but that it has already begun is more difficult to belive. Than again Mother Earth is a delicate system and the amounts of poison being introduce into the oceans may be enough to release toxic fumes that far inland and with enough potency to do damages to crops. The scariest things may be in knowing what this stuff does when it seeps into the water table and children and families start to ingest mass quantities of it. It's just ridiculous that no one has tested any of these chemical dispersants and to think they are pouring tons of it into the ocean each day is simply mind boggling. This crap may not kill people immediately but the future health related issues could be staggering and lets not forget the genetic damage and birth defects it can cause in future generations. If any of this is true than the BP Oil spill will last more than one life time and could have an everlasting effect on the ecology of not only the Gulf but the entire Southern US and Mexico.

Below is the discussion so far on Blog entry item titled: Embattled Florida Governor says "We need to stop offshore oil drilling in Florida". Feel free to add your own comments!

PostHeaderIcon Embattled Florida Governor says "We need to stop offshore oil drilling in Florida"

I have been very impressed with our Florida Governor Charlie Christ over the past few months but the sad part is that I feel it's more about doing what the people want so he can keep his job. I'll take whatever we can get and if he is serious about putting a ban on offshore drilling in Florida than I will be on the front lines fighting with him because there is simply no way the South Coast can afford a second spill ever. I realize it's to late for the Gulf region and we should be focused on clean up but it is also very nice to think that we may be able to stop this from ever happening directly offshore in our beloved Sunshine State.

I wonder too myself what would happen if that oil spill had been located off the Florida Keys and spread all around the entire state and I cringe in fear that this beautiful State with so many thousands of miles of coastline and beaches would be awash in black death much like that which has come ashore in Mississippi or Louisiana. I could not imagine what life in Florida would be like without our beautiful beaches and regardless of how nice the weather is you can't enjoy life here with out the beaches.

If Christ is serious about banning oil development in the Sunshine State then he gets our vote as independent Governor but if he backs out or lets something slip through he can forget about his aspirations beyond Florida. I'll dedicate my life online to making sure a liar like that never gets more power that what he has already had. Do you think Christ cares about Florida or his job?

Every year a new group of figures come out, and every year those of us who track global warming (aka climate change ) are a little bit more concerned about the loss of Arctic Ocean sea ice, and how that loss will affect populations in both the short- and long-term.

This year’s figures, courtesy of NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, U.S.), show that ice continues to melt, this year reaching its second-lowest level since scientists began keeping records.

These records, which are kept at the NASA-supported National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) at the University of ...

Japan Can Replace Nuclear with Renewables -Schroeder

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, a leading proponent of Germany phasing out nuclear power, has said that in the wake of Japan’s disastrous 11 March Fukushima nuclear accident that the country can both phase out nuclear power and become a pioneer in sources of alternative energy.

In an interview with Mainichi newspaper Schroeder said, "Japan is in a position where it is technologically capable of forming different energy policies. Japan could become a pioneer in energy other than nuclear power. Even risks of less realistic dangers like terrorism or airplane accidents must not be ruled out if there is ...

Smoking As a result of Early Life Stress

Early childhood adversity increases the likelihood of developing nicotine addiction in later life, according to a study published online this week in Neuropsychopharmacology. The work suggests that this adversity may have a different effect on women and men, especially in the presence of a certain genetic alteration.

The predisposition for nicotine addiction is known to be heavily influenced by genetics, but little is known about the combined effect of genetics and environment on cigarette smoking.

Joel Gelernter and team surveyed 2,206 European-American participants about smoking behavior and childhood trauma, such as physical abuse or witnessing a violent crime. They ...

Top California Strawberry Growing Regions See No Decrease in Banned pesticide

Despite a ban on the pesticide, according to an article from New America Media, levels of methyl bromide in many of California’s top strawberry-growing regions remain almost as high as they were ten years ago.  The fumigant was supposed to have been phased out by 2005, but in 2009, the latest year for which data is available, use of methyl bromide was down only 50 percent from 2000.  While a small amount of methyl bromide can still be used in situations where there is no alternative—a decision determined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)—the New ...

Sterile Male technology Used to Wipe Out Undesirable Species

Not so long ago a weapon the size of a hypodermic needle was released in Juazeiro, Brazil, in the state of Bahia.

The weapon operates under its own power. And in fact it looks more or less harmless, but once released it will spell the death of an entire species which has been on earth for the past four million years.

The weapon is a mosquito. A male mosquito, but he won’t complete his mission by killing, which is the usual method of waging war. He will complete it by making love. To female mosquitoes, who as a result ...

Rethinking Migration

Human migration in response to environmental change can be beneficial and, in some circumstances, should be enabled, rather than constrained, say Richard Black, Stephen R. G. Bennett, Sandy M. Thomas and John R. Beddington in a Comment in Nature. The article is linked to the authors’ report on migration and environmental change — released on 20 October.

Investigating the likely movement of people both within and between countries over the next 50 years, the UK government’s Foresight report contends that migration will offer opportunities as well as challenges. Moreover, the greatest risks could be borne by those who are unable ...

Washing Machines -An Unexpected Source of "Microplastic" Pollution

Scientists are reporting that household washing machines seem to be a major source of so-called “microplastic” pollution — bits of polyester and acrylic smaller than the head of a pin — that they now have detected on ocean shorelines worldwide. Their report describing this potentially harmful material appears in ACS’ journal Environmental Science & Technology.

Mark Browne and colleagues explain that the accumulation of microplastic debris in marine environments has raised health and safety concerns. The bits of plastic contain potentially harmful ingredients which go into the bodies of animals and could be transferred to people who consume fish. Ingested microplastic can transfer ...

We are Smarter and Less Violent -says Stephen Pinker

Believe it or not, we are getting smarter ― and, as a direct result, less violent, argues Steven Pinker in a Comment in Nature this week, which is adapted from his new book "The Better Angels of our Nature- Why Violence has Declined"

Even though it may feel as if we are constantly surrounded by violence, previous centuries had it much worse — then, collapsing empires, horse-tribe invasions, slave trades and annihilations of native peoples were not unusual. Life before civilization was even bloodier. Estimates suggest that about 15% of people living in non-state societies died violently — five times the proportion of ...

Pakistan's Power Minister's Job in Jeopardy

The ongoing energy crisis in Pakistan may lead to the removal of Minister for Water and Power Syed Naveed Qamar over his seeming inability to resolve the situation.

Because of constantly rising demand and an obsolete power infrastructure increasingly severe electricity shortages are occurring, which are causing widespread rolling blackouts that have stifled industrial production and occasionally caused protests and rioting, as the outages can last 6–8 hours a day in the cities and many more in the rural areas.

Government sources speaking on condition of anonymity remarked that President Zadari and the Finance Ministry are increasingly annoyed over ...
