Eco Product Review: Huggies Pure and Natural Infant Diapers
Our daughter Kaya Monique is just over one week old now and we ran out of the hospital issued diapers she was using so we had to make the decision which brand of diapers to use for our newborn child. No, we are not prepared to wash cloth diapers at the moment and we are goign to have to purchase disposable diapers like the rest of the world. We do a lot of shopping at the the local Walmart to save over the cost of other outlets although I much prefer to spend my money with smaller family owned stores when possible. Baby Diapers are not something I can find just any place so we took a look over the selections offered there to compare them for earth friendly attributes. yes I do realize diapers in general are not earth friendly but we need to be realistic in our approach to this and I should understand with all we have to do, clothe diapers are not a reasonable choice right now.
I chose the Huggies Brand Pure and Natural Diapers purely based on the packaging. I thought to myself why not make the same choices most Americans would face and use just the advertised package for my decisions. I will of course modify my choice over time and I bought the first pack of diapers just to sample them. I am so happy that we did. They cost about 15% more than standard diapers but man are they sure sweet. The fit and form are great as these are a part of the Huggies Little Mover collection and they offer a tight but comfortable seal. The baby has not leaked out from her diapers as of yet but I do not see tht as an issue with these on girls. The diapers are cut just right and even include the umbilical cutout for newborns.
These diapers are much softer and seemingly more comfortable then any other diaper we have sampled and the liner is so soft you want to cuddle with it. Our newborn does not pass much but they seem to do the job and hold the mess just fine. As stated we have had no leaks or blowouts at this point.
What makes these diapers earth friendly? the materials used are bio degradeable and they are made primarily from organic cotton fibers. Be careful of the labels as the recycled logo which reads 20% post consumer materials is actually referring to the external packaing and not the diapers inside. These diapers do not contain any post consumer materials in the actual diaper construction. The diapers are hyp allergenic and are infused with aloe and Vitamin E for smooth skin. The design incorporates less inks and dyes which do not end up in the landfills or water table locally.
For the price I like the design and organic cottton feel but I still wonder what percentage of these are bio degradeable and what portion will be with us for a long time.
Silk Soy Milk is running a promotion called the Green Caps for a Greener World Sweepstakes which allows you to enter the UPC code from your carton of Silk Soy Milk for the chance to win a $40,000 green home makeover and a new Smart Fortwo vehicle.
Soy Milk is a healthier choice over cows milk and I began drinking it some years ago. I prefer the taste of Silk Soy Milk over the many other available brands that I have tried and I was glad to see the new Green Caps program when I picked up the most recent carton. After reading details I can see that two great green causes will receive up to $100,000 each based on the number of Green Cap codes entered on their website at http://www.silksoymilk.com which had over 519,000 entries when I checked my carton.
Sadly I did not win a home makeover but I can try again just by buying another carton of heart healthy soy milk and the green charities will still get paid for my submissions so it was all worth the effort in the end.
